YouTube uses the popularity of BTS to promote its new ‘shorts’ option

After launching the previous phase of its TikTok-like ‘Shorts’ feature last week, which sees the beta version of the option now available in all regions, and making panties available to all US users last month, YouTube now wants to take Shorts to the next level, as it wants to ward off the increasing competition from TikTok on the short form video front.

Today, YouTube announced his first exclusive Shorts dance challenge, which will be linked to the launch of the new track by the K-pop sensation BTS.

As per Youtube:

“Starting this Friday, anyone from around the world can create a 15-second YouTube short from the YouTube mobile app, repeating the core dance steps of the ‘Permission to Dance’ music video. The dance steps for this challenge are the ‘ International ‘Sign’ gestures that the septet saw in the music video, meaning “Joy”, “Dance” and “Peace”.

Between July 23 and August 14, YouTube invites BTS fans to post their own version of the dance steps to Shorts, and BTS then selects some of their favorite Shorts to be included in an official compilation video. Users should include the hashtags #PermissiontoDance and #Shorts to consider their creations.

Switching to BTS is a smart move by YouTube as it wants to raise awareness of shorts and increase adoption among younger users.

Over the past twelve months, BTS’s videos have been viewed more than 10 billion times on the platform as the band continues to gain momentum, while BTS is also one of the top 5 most watched artists on YouTube.

“With 54 million subscribers on its official artist channel, they are the third highest-grossing artist on YouTube. BTS has joined YouTube’s prestigious billion-view club on three different occasions with its hits DNA, Boy With Luv, and recently Dynamite. “

That popularity will undoubtedly give more people who give this Shorts preamble, and if they then have a good experience and get their tricks with their Shorts clippings, it can help YouTube adopt Shorts and steal some audience from TikTok.

This is a growing source of concern for both YouTube and Facebook. TikTok joined the at the top of the download maps of the app for 18 months in a row, and it’s a great app for younger audiences to become a key social media connection app.

This will lead to it becoming a greater consideration for marketers, who steal advertising dollars from the incumbents, and it may also make it a more important app in the lives of more users.

We all know what happened when the youth switched from MySpace to Facebook, and Facebook does not want to be overtaken, so both platforms try to combat the rise of TikTok in any way.

YouTube’s commitment to BTS is perhaps the best idea to date, and while Shorts is unlikely to see a pile of TikTok thieves steal, it will raise awareness of the tool, giving it a better chance of winning. .

And if YouTube can also highlight the benefits and merits for creators, it could deliver a bigger blow to TikTok in the long run.
