It was the height of the first Internet craze when my friend and colleague David Lawder wowed our Washington newsroom with two words: “Google it.”
And since that day about 27 years ago, from desktops to laptops and eventually smartphones, I have stuck with the search engine cooked up by a couple of Stanford grad students in their dorm rooms. But this week, no more. After years of reading about increasing problems with Google search, I finally experienced them firsthand — and it was a costly lesson.
The story of Google’s declining usefulness (and increasing profitability) has been bubbling for years, as the company added more advertising, more sponsored links, and more of its own content to its search results page. As software developer and former Google employee Tim Bray put it last year: “These days, when I use Google Search or Chrome or Maps I just don’t feel like they’re on my side.”
