On July 15, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline announced its crisis hotline would be transitioned to a three-digit number — 988. People can call, chat or text this number 24 hours a day to speak to a trained counselor.

It’s an important step given the sharp increase in depression and suicide over the last two years, especially among teens. A crisis hotline is critical for behaviors such as suicidal ideation that tend to be episodic — experienced at moments, but not all the time. The goal is to make it easy for people to get help when they need it most.

So how do people find this potentially lifesaving information online? Turns out, it depends on which search engine you use. Most major search engines automatically display information for the Lifeline if a person searches for “suicide” or related terms. Google, for instance, shows a prominent message “Help is available: Speak with someone today.” There’s a phone number and clickable buttons to reach the Lifeline.
