Apple could start showing ads in Apple Maps from next year as part of its plans to generate more revenues from its ad business. Alongside Google Maps, Apple Maps is one of the leading mapping services globally. However, while users can access Google Maps from a plethora of third-party platforms, such as PCs, MacBooks and iPhones, Apple Maps is restricted to Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watches. However, privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo uses Apple’s MapKit JS framework to offer its online mapping services, meaning DDG users have a roundabout way of accessing Apple Maps on non-Apple devices.

Apple Maps was launched in 2012 as a competitor to Google Maps, with the promise of many new features. Apple even made its own mapping system the default on iPhones, replacing Google Maps.
