An online scam that has been in Europe since 2013 has now made its way to Alberta, and it has cost some victims upwards of $800,000.

Susan Ratchford, an RCMP investigator with the Integrated Market Enforcement Team (IMET) explained that this type of scam pertains to a legitimate company or business brand being cloned.

“They’ve actually just taken a legitimate company or business and made an exact copy of it and put it on the internet and made a few minor changes to the legitimate website,” Ratchford said. ” A legitimate website would have the actual phone number and email address, but the cloned website will direct you to a different email address and a different phone number.”

According to a press release from the Alberta RCMP, these “brand hijacking” scams, first target victims through their online searches.
