Vehicle chase leads to search for suspect, prompts several schools to lock down – WLOS
SYLVA, N.C. (WLOS) — Jackson county authorities have provided updates and clarified several details in an ongoing situation that prompted several schools to lock down on Tuesday.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says around 10 a.m. on June 7, deputies were notified of a vehicle stolen from Buncombe County that was operating on Little Savannah Road and NC116 in Jackson County. After locating the vehicle and attempting a traffic stop, officials say the driver did not stop for deputies.
Authorities then pursued the vehicle and a satellite tracking service remotely disabled the driver’s engine. The sheriff’s office says the suspect then drove into the parking lot of the State Employee’s Credit Union at the intersection of NC116 and NC107 and “fled on foot eluding pursuing law enforcement officers.”
To be cautious, supervisors with the sheriff’s office and Sylva Police Department recommended business and schools in the area lock down.
