What if the federal statistics on a deadly nationwide epidemic turned out to reflect fewer than half the American fatalities that they should?

No, for once we’re not talking about the ways that Washington, D.C. indexes deaths caused by COVID-19.

Rather, it’s Americans who have died under color of the authority of police departments around our nation that have been so severely under-reported.

And that scandalous under-reporting has not been the case just in recent years.

For four decades, about 55% of the killings by American police officers have gone uncounted, according to a study released last month conducted by researchers at the University of Washington and published in The Lancet, the British medical journal.

“Across all races and states in the USA,” the authors report, “we estimate 30,800 deaths … from police violence between 1980 and 2018; this represents 17,100 more deaths … than reported by the” National Vital Statistics System.
