The federal government proposed legislation on Sunday that would boost the powers of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to pressure tech companies into fighting online misinformation.
The proposed laws follow others which passed in 2021, giving the eSafety Commissioner the power to compel tech companies to explain what they are doing to control other forms of harmful content, such as hate speech or child sexual abuse material.
While the 2021 reforms also gave the eSafety Commissioner the power to require internet service providers to block “abhorrent violent material” in certain circumstances — such as footage recorded by the Christchurch mosque gunman in the shooting’s aftermath — the new proposed laws…
