First things first! A US court just told us what we all knew and did so for a long time. That Google was breaking laws to entrench itself as the lord of all it perceives in the internet search space. A company that grew its search revenues from $6 billion to $260 billion within a decade was getting this right – though at the expense of everything and everyone else.
In a decision that runs into 286 pages, Judge Amit Mehta of the United States District Court for Columbia said Google “is a monopolist” and has violated US antitrust law, specifically Section 2 of the Sherman Act. In the landmark ruling, the judge noted that Google illegally maintained a monopoly in search by paying companies to make Google the default search engine on smartphones and other devices.
