As I stated in yesterday’s op-ed, I do not claim to be an unbiased commentator on Australia’s News Media Bargaining (NMBC). I was chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) when it conceived of the NMBC and were then charged by the Australian Government with its implementation.

As Canada moves forward with C-18, the Online News Act, you can expect a reaction from Google and Meta.
Google argued publicly, and generated a campaign, to the effect that the NMBC would allow large companies to control the internet. This argument often drew amazement as the “large company” Google had in mind was News Corp, which is less that 1% of the market value of Google; further, many see Google itself as the large company that controls the internet.
In a recent submission to the USA Copyright Office, voicing concern that the NMBC might be replicated in the USA, Google made arguments it often used when lobbying in Australia, as follows.
