Schools should Google prospective teachers to assess their ‘suitability’ to work with children, officials have said.

Updated guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) advises head teachers to use a search engine to unearth information about those applying for classroom jobs – but a reference to scouring social media was removed after some schools raised privacy concerns.

A DfE consultation on safeguarding launched in January said the question of online vetting had arisen in part ‘on the back of the tragic murder of Sarah Everard‘ by a serving police officer.

Consultation responses showed many schools and colleges carry out such processes on top of the usual checks.

Head teachers are advised to use their professional judgment in considering any details that emerge.

The new guidance comes into force in September.
