Reddit User Exposes Automated Content Scraping on World of … – Fagen wasanni
On Thursday, a Reddit user posted a fake announcement on the World of Warcraft subreddit about the introduction of “Glorbo” to the game. Although Glorbo does not exist, the post revealed a website that automatically scrapes Reddit for news with little human oversight.
Shortly after the deceptive post appeared, an article about Glorbo surfaced on “The Portal,” a gaming news content mill operated by Z League. The Z League article mindlessly regurgitated the Reddit post and included nonsensical details. The author of the article, “Lucy Reed,” is suspected to be a bot since she authored over 80 articles in a single day.
Members of the World of Warcraft subreddit noticed this automated content scraping and decided to try to manipulate the bots to feature their own posts on sites like The Portal.
