WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University, days after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked Purdue Pharma‘s multi-billion opioid settlement, reiterated the college “is not and has never been affiliated in any way with Purdue Pharma.”
Last week, the Supreme Court temporarily blocked a settlement reached with OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma that would require members of the Sackler family to pay $6 billion. The blocked settlement also would shield the family from future lawsuits over the nation’s opioid crisis, USA Today reported.
In November 2020, Purdue Pharma, the company that invented the painkiller OxyContin, pleaded guilty to three federal criminal charges and admitted its role in fueling the decades-long opioid epidemic. In 2021 alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated 106,699 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States.
