STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – What was the United States like in 1950?
Public data is now available that can help you get those answers. After more than seven decades, raw data from the 1950 decennial Census was released on Friday by the National Archives and Records Administration for the first time.
Census data is made public every 72 years, the result of an agreement in 1952 between the Census Bureau and the National Archives; it was codified by Congress in 1978. The 1940 Census was released 10 years ago.
The release contains 6.4 million pages of data from the 1950′s Census count that has been digitized, along with 6,373 microfilm rolls.
A search of Richmond County, New York, returns 290 pages of information.
Like other decennial Census counts, the data includes names, ages, and addresses, as well as job descriptions, incomes, and employment information that gives a snapshot of what life was like in the 1950s.
