Ottawa has pledged to model its legislation after Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code, which came into effect last year.
OTTAWA—The federal government has tabled legislation that would see web giants pay media outlets for linking to news content on their platforms in a bid to level the playing field between big tech and Canada’s shrinking news industry.
Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez on Tuesday introduced the bill, which would compel digital giants like Google and Facebook to share some of the revenues they generate from posting Canadian news content with media outlets.
The government will hold a technical briefing on the details of the bill Tuesday morning, followed by a news conference held by Rodriguez.
The Liberal government has already pledged to model its legislation after Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code, which came into effect just over one year ago and allows news publishers and tech giants to negotiate their own payment deals for content shared to their sites….
