Opinion: Why the TikTok ban needs university exemptions – Austin American-Statesman
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp recently banned state employees from using the social media application TikTok on state-owned devices. Kemp joined Greg Abbott and a handful of other governors who have issued similar mandates and the action is in keeping with concerns expressed by some political leaders. As faculty at the University of Texas, we recently received an email from the university’s Compliance Services directing us to “immediately remove” the app. Gov. Abbott says the ban is aimed at protecting state information from the Chinese government, a relevant concern since TikTok is owned by Chinese company ByteDance.
Efforts to ban TikTok from government devices stand in sharp contrast to the popularity of the app among young Americans. Pew Research finds that two-thirds of 13-17 year olds have used the platform.
