N.J. man, 18, charged with threatening to attack synagogues, authorities say – NJ.com
An 18-year-old New Jersey man was arrested Thursday and charged with sharing on social media “a manifesto containing threats to attack a synagogue and Jewish people” that triggered a statewide FBI warning last week and prompted police to increase security synagogues and Jewish schools.
Omar Alkattoul, of Sayreville, is charged with one count of transmitting a threat in interstate and foreign commerce, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
Alkattoul was scheduled to appear in court Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jessica S. Allen in Newark federal court.
The threats include audio recordings on an iPhone of Alkattoul speaking in Arabic, authorities said. Investigators performed a consensual search of the iPhone on Friday, according to charging documents.
The FBI issued a rare statewide alert on Nov. 3 and announced a suspect had been identified the next day.
