Artificial intelligence is poised to hand more power to the biggest technology companies, such as Google, and will create a “tsunami” of job losses at publishers, the chief executive of News Corporation has warned.
Speaking at a technology conference in San Francisco last week, Robert Thomson said the speed at which search engines gained influence over news distribution would be “amplified many times over in the era of AI”. He added: “Clearly, advertising revenue has shifted from the creator to the distributor. And so, again, it really is incumbent on these [technology] companies to recognise that responsibility in the end to their own products and, certainly, to society.”
