Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, consumers looking for a local business typically did two things: They thumbed through the Yellow Pages for a name and address and they pulled a map from their glove compartment to figure out how to get there.

Later came handy online tools like MapQuest, which charted routes to given destinations — typically printed at home and spread out on the passenger seat in hopes of being able to consult the turns while driving.

Today everyone uses smartphones to search for businesses and get directions, which can be visual or audible or both. It’s not quite the same as getting the big picture with a full-on map, and I suspect that relying on smartphone directions can actually inhibit learning how to get from point A to point B from memory.
