Neeva Inc, a privacy-focused search engine upstart co-founded by a former Google LLC executive, announced Saturday it’s shutting down its consumer search engine to focus on artificial intelligence modeling.
The announcement was made on a post to the company blog written by Sridhar Ramaswamy and Vivek Raghunathan, Neeva’s co-founders. The switch from a consumer-facing search engine to focusing on the use of generative AI and large language models came as a response to market pressures, they wrote. The Mountain View-based company launched Neeva AI, a challenger to OpenAI LLC’s ChatGPT, in January.
“We’ve discovered that it is one thing to build a search engine, and an entirely different thing to convince regular users of the need to switch to a better choice,” the co-founders wrote.
Founded in 2019, Neeva was meant to be an alternative to Google and Microsoft Corp.’s Bing search engines by not collecting or profiting off its users’ personal data.
