MLB star Ohtani Shohei wins top internet search award in Japan … – NHK WORLD

A leading Japanese search engine has named Major League Baseball’s two-way star Ohtani Shohei as the top winner of its annual internet search awards.

Yahoo Japan presents the awards to the people and products that posted the largest gains in online searches during the year. It released the 2023 results for multiple categories on Tuesday.

Ohtani won the grand prize. He also topped the category for athletes.

Ohtani was named the Most Valuable Player in the American League this season. He pitched and batted for the Los Angeles Angels. He also became the first Asian player to claim the home run title.

Ohtani also helped Japan win the World Baseball Classic in March. It was the country’s first victory in three tournaments.

In the category for musicians, the top prize went to Atarashii Gakko! — a girls’ group that has created buzz with its quirky neck-swinging dance.

The category for comedians was topped by Tonikaku Akarui Yasumura. He reached the finals of the popular audition program…
