Meet Penpot, an open source design platform made for designers and developers – Smashing Magazine
The world of developer tools lives and breathes open source. Open, free programming languages, frameworks or even code editors that anyone can contribute to – lie at the heart of the premise of the free, open web. However, with the design tools, it has always been a very different story. For our design processes, most stick to a palette of paid, commercial tools – the majority of which were either created or later acquired by large technology companies. Fortunately, in this space as well, we are starting to see some alternatives.
One such alternative is Penpot, an open source design application that has recently started to gain popularity. With over 250,000 entries and 20,000 GitHub stars, Penpot has already made a name for itself, and it’s growing as a viable alternative to other design tools out there.
However, being open source isn’t the only thing that makes Penpot unique. It also has some killer features up its sleeve that make it a very good match for a great collaboration between designers and developers. Curious to learn more? Let’s take a closer look together.
If you’ve ever done your fair share of design and coding, I bet you’ve had your moments...
