Former US marine injured while fighting in Ukraine

A former US marine detained in Russia and freed last year in a prisoner swap was injured while fighting in Ukraine, US officials said.

Trevor Reed was evacuated from Ukraine with the help of a non-governmental organisation and was transported to Germany to receive medical care, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said on Wednesday.

Patel said Reed was there in his personal capacity and warned American citizens against travelling to Ukraine or joining the fighting.

“Mr Reed was not engaged in any activities on behalf of the US government,” Patel said.

US officials said they continue to engage Russia on the release of other Americans unjustly held in Russian detention, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan.
