PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Three young ladies who are just 11 years old are already thinking years ahead by advocating for change today.
Louisa Andersen, Heidi Kirshman, and Louisa Brown are out to save the world.
Their first step involves their fifth grade exhibition project.
“An exhibition project is basically where we assess problems, local or global, and we try to do something to fix the cause,” said Andersen.
“We are working on the crisis of plastic pollution in the ocean,” said Brown.
Their presentation lays out a grim prediction from experts. There could be more plastic in the ocean than fish by the year 2050.
According to the United Nations, more than eight million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year.
And the UN also reports that 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic annually.
Andersen wants their urgent message about plastics to hit home.
