Normally, judges are among the most restrained of people. After all, one of the characteristics of the job is supposed to be having a “judicial temperament.” Normally . . . but not always. And sometimes, as happened between two judges on the Court of Appeal in Sacramento, they can get into the judicial equivalent of a food fight.

The case involved a prison inmate named Steven Martinez. The main opinion, written by Justice Arthur Scotland, began by explaining that in 2001, Martinez was in “the third year of a sentence of 157 years to life for kidnapping a woman and committing violent crimes against her” when he was attacked by two fellow inmates and stabbed in the neck, rendering him a complete quadriplegic.

Martinez stayed alive, but was rendered incapable of movement below his neck. In 2008, he applied for something called “compassionate release” — available to inmates who either have six months or less to live, or who have “become permanently medically incapacitated” and “would…
