Japan FTC to Launch Probe into Google – Nippon.com

Tokyo, Oct. 23 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s Fair Trade Commission said Monday that it will open an investigation into Google on suspicion of unreasonably demanding that smartphone makers give priority to its apps over rival products, in violation of the antimonopoly law.

Google is suspected of demanding that makers of Android smartphones prioritize its search engine and browser apps in screen settings, the FTC said.

The U.S. technology giant also allegedly formed contracts with smartphone makers to provide them with part of advertising revenues in exchange for not using rival search engine apps, the FTC said.

The FTC said it will ask for information and opinions related to the allegations from the public. The agency is expected to consider using such input for the investigation, people familiar with the matter said.
