Ban imposed for man caught drink driving ‘ during early morning mercy mission

A DRINK driver from Carlisle said he committed the offence after a friend struggling with a mental health crisis asked him to visit him in the early hours.

Police spotted Matthew McDonnell, 34, slowly driving his Skoda Octavia on Botchergate at 3.30am on Saturday, April 8, the city’s Rickergate court heard. A test showed that he had 82mcg of alcohol in every 100mls of breath.

The legal limit for driving is 35mcg.

Prosecutor George Shelley said the defendant, of Glaramara Drive, Carlisle, was given a breath test after officers noticed that he smelled of alcohol.
