OTTAWA—Google is facing accusations of manipulation, censorship and hypocrisy over its decision to secretly deploy a test that blocks news content for some Canadians — a move the company says stems from its concerns with Ottawa’s online news bill.
Late Wednesday, it emerged that Google had recently started limiting how Canadian and global news content appears on its search engine for less than four per cent of Canadian users of the service. The company had not publicly disclosed its intent to do so, stating that it conducts thousands of tests, many of which don’t result in permanent changes.
