The search giant says that country-specific sites are no longer necessary.
All Google Search users will be redirected from their country-specific sites to google.com, the search giant announced in a blog post yesterday (15 April). The change will be rolled out gradually over the coming months.
Historically, Google has used country code top-level domain (ccTLD) names, such as google.ng, for Nigeria or google.com.br for Brazil. This was done in order to provide localised results.
However, the search giant said that its ability to provide local results has improved over the years, and since 2017, it has provided the same experience with local results to all its users, regardless of whether they were using google.com or their country’s ccTLD.
Google says that country-level domains are no longer necessary. As a result, it will be redirecting traffic from ccTLDs. Although, according to Google, nothing about the search experience itself should change.
