Google is telling people how to pronounce Welsh place names wrongly – WalesOnline

In Wales, the mispronunciation of our place names seems to be a common occurrence.

From property programmes to TV news reports, at times the Welsh language cannot escape from the clutches of mispronunciations.

And it seems that Google can also be added on that list. The search engine’s pronunciation tool is telling users how to pronounce Welsh place names wrongly.

The company’s search page is available in 149 languages, including English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Welsh.

However, it seems that the search engine’s tool offers an Anglicised pronunciation of Welsh place names, which is incorrect.

A simple Google search shows an array of incorrect pronunciation, including Abersoch being mispronounced as ‘a-buh-sok’.
