Google and Facebook may remove news articles from their UK platforms in a “bully-boy” attempt to stop them being forced to pay journalism publishers, a senior media industry campaigner has claimed.
New legislation that could eventually result in big tech firms being compelled to help fund British online news outlets might lead to the same kind of tense stand-offs seen overseas, News Media Association CEO, Owen Meredith, told i.
Facebook temporarily blocked news reports in Australia in 2021 and Google has removed links to some articles in Canada this year, in response to similar government moves in those countries.
Major internet companies believe the UK plans are unwarranted, saying their services already provide great benefits to media outlets. They have engaged officials with intensive appeals against the plans, which are expected to grow louder, but the Government is pressing ahead with this controversial element of its Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill.
