Google agrees to $19.5 million settlement for Illinois complaint over tracking – Jacksonville Journal-Courier
Google will pay Illinois $19.5 million as part of a settlement over the search engine and technology firm’s location-tracking practices.
Illinois was one of 38 states that took Google to task after reports that its “location history” and “web and app activity” settings recorded users’ movements even when told not to, according to Attorney General Kwame Raoul.
Although “location history,” which keeps tabs on where users go, is turned off by default, “web and app activity” — which collects things such as a person’s search history — is automatically turned on when someone sets up a Google account, according to the complaint. That information could be used to create user “profiles” that could be used for such things as targeting advertising to individuals.
