The two of us met after the invasion of Ukraine started. We were both protesting outside the Russian Embassy in Ottawa, where people from both the Russian and Ukrainian community were united by one slogan: “Stop Putin! Stop the war.” We are: Oxana Genina, a naturalized Canadian for 18 years and a member of the Ottawa Ukrainian community; and Maria Kartasheva, who came to Canada from Russia three years ago.

We have found that what unites us is a common goal: peace in Ukraine. This war was ordered by Vladimir Putin, but it is carried out by hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers and officers on Ukrainian land. And sadly, many people in Russia believe this “military operation” is justified.
