Growing up in Sonoma County, I lived near a gay couple who were friends of my family and crucial to our neighborhood. As a young girl, I worked in their business, an experience that deeply influenced me.
Now, as an adult, I’m connected to members of the LGBTQIA+ community through friendships and family. Observing the national trend of restrictive legislation and book bans concerning this community is disheartening.
The urgency of advocacy
In these times, it’s critical to advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s not a luxury to be passive. We can counter discriminatory laws by supporting civil rights organizations locally and nationally. Using an online search engine can lead us to many such LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups. Electing congressional representatives with inclusive views is also important.
