Former SCANA executive faces sentencing for V.C. Summer plant … – WACH.com
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — A former executive of the now-defunct SCANA corporation will be sentenced in federal court Wednesday morning.
Stephen Byrne, a former Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for the state’s former energy company, may receive jail time for his role in the failed V.C. Summer Nuclear Plant project that made headlines in 2017 and 2018.
Byrne and other executives pleaded guilty in July 2020 for his role in a “scheme to defraud” customers for a project to build two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors just north of Columbia. The US District Attorney’s Office says Byrne joined the conspiracy after becoming aware of failed efforts to improve the pace and productivity of the project.
Ultimately, he made false statements to the public and several government agencies, allegedly misusing the trust gained from his role overseeing all nuclear operations in SCANA’s control.
The former executive is facing up to 5 years in prison. It is unclear if the court will issue a fine.
