MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. — West Virginia will receive $1.2 billion in federal funding to get high-speed internet, and local county officials are excited for the future.
“It will affect us tremendously,” Marshall County Commissioner Mike Ferro said. “There is no question about it.”
Marshall county and every other county in West Virginia will be receiving the funds from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program.
It’s something U.S. Senators Joe Machin and Shelly More Capito fought for in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
“The infrastructure package that I worked on, and I made sure that broadband expansion was an integral part of this, to the unserved and underserved part of our state,” Capito said.
According to the Federal Communications Commission’s broadband coverage map, West Virginia and Alaska have the least amount of internet access in the United States.
