Concerns over ‘effectiveness’ of Google news service | Ireland | The Sunday Times – The Times

Micheál Martin, the taoiseach, has been warned that Google News Showcase may be ineffective and could breach competition rules in how it pays for content from Irish media organisations.

A briefing document circulated before the taoiseach’s meeting in March with Kent Walker, Google’s chief legal officer, said that “the effectiveness” of deals between Google and 40 Irish news publishers “remain to be seen”.

It added: “It is unclear whether Google will reach agreements with a select number of publishers or with all publishers.”

The briefing note referred to competition investigations in France and Germany into whether Google had broken competition rules by “not negotiating fairly with press publishers”.
