China’s population falls for first time in 60 years – The Times
China’s population has fallen for the first time in 60 years, a historic turn that could mark the start of a long-term decline with implications for both the country’s economy and the world.
The population fell by 850,000 to 1.4118 billion in 2022, down from 1.4126 billion a year earlier, official data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics showed.
The government said 9.56 million people were born in China last year, a drop of nearly 10 per cent from 2021. The national birth rate fell to 6.77 births for every 1,000 women, from 7.52 in 2021. It is the lowest rate since records began in 1949.
Deaths also outnumbered births for the first time last year. The national death rate was 7.37 per thousand,
