Since the advent of computing technology, minds have turned to question whether or not a computer can achieve thought.
One such mind that raised this question belonged to Alan Turning, a prolific British mathematician and logician. He proposed a test to determine if a computer could “think.”
The test involves a human interrogator who must discern whether the replies to their line of questioning indicate sentience. A common form of this test would include an interrogator in a room separate from a machine and a human. If the machine can successfully convince the interrogator that the other person is the machine, then that machine passes the Turning Test. Since its conception, no computer nor A.I. has been able to pass the Turning test, until recently when two A.I. chatbots managed to pass. The first was Google’s LAMBDA A.I., followed closely by the popular ChatGPT, which can now make doing work within the education system and the workforce obsolete.
