There was a brief period between the 2020/21 and 2021/22 Premier League seasons that games between Aston Villa and Everton came to be affectionately known as the ‘Cazoo Derby’.

The two clubs were the crown jewels in the sponsorship portfolio of the upstart online car retailer, which made sports partnerships a core part of its marketing strategy in the build-up to and following its launch in 2019.

Armed with significant seed funding and under pressure to deliver hyper-growth, Cazoo soon followed those shirt sponsorships with deals across cricket, rugby, darts, snooker, horse racing and golf.

But warning signs started to surface in late 2021, when it was revealed that the used car dealer had lost UK102 million in the first half of that year. Still, Cazoo continued on its merry way at the start of 2022, signing deals with top-flight soccer clubs in Germany, Italy and Spain as it plotted its expansion across Europe.
