SPRINGFIELD — A new state audit of the troubled Hampden County Retirement Board concluded the cleaned-up board is showing improvement after an era of bloated expenses and paying scam vendors.
A copy of the audit conducted on behalf of the state’s Public Employee Retirement Administration Commission, best known as PERAC, covers the board’s financial activities from Jan. 1, 2018 to Dec. 31, 2020.
A prior audit that rocked the board and angered its membership covered Jan. 1, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2017, as that review highlighted more than $235,000 in payments to 50 bogus vendors for “search engine optimization” and other phony services plus hints that prior officials were using the retirement fund as a trough.
But, the current audit suggests the board is getting back on track.
“Our current audit found that the HCRB adequately resolved several of the following issues,” the report reads, continuing on to provide a retrospective of its prior woes.
