Apple iPhone 14 Pro Beats Google Pixel 7 Pro In Selfie Camera Test — But Not For Photos

New Pixel 7 Pro camera tests show that Google’s latest flagship smartphone can’t quite catch the iPhone 14 Pro for selfie performance, but that’s not the case when it comes to still images.

When it comes to front-camera performance, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro scores Dxomark’s highest-ever score for front camera performance, largely due to its superb video capabilities. However, the Pixel 7 Pro has just taken the crown for selfie stills.

Google’s Pixel 7 Pro achieves third place in Dxomark’s Selfie test.

With a score of 142 overall points in Dxomark’s recently updated ‘Selfie’ benchmark, the Pixel 7 Pro takes third place, coming in three points behind Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro, which heads up the leaderboard ahead of Huawei’s second-placed P50 Pro.

However, that doesn’t mean Apple’s flagship is going to deliver better front camera performance in all cases. Look a little deeper into the sub-scores and you’ll find there’s more to consider here than the overall selfie score. When it comes to taking photos in selfie mode, the Pixel 7 Pro actually outperforms Apple’s flagship by a single point.

This result might come as a surprise, given that the Pixel 7 Pro front camera, unlike the iPhone flagship, does not provide autofocus and comes with a lower-resolution sensor and a smaller lens aperture. Indeed, the iPhone 14 Pro beats the Pixel 7 Pro in focus, texture and bokeh.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro achieves Dxomark’s best overall Selfie score, but the Pixel Pro 7 scores … [+] higher for selfie photos.

Here it’s Google’s software that allows the Pixel 7 Pro to pick up ground and overtake the iPhone 14 Pro, by achieving the No.1 best scores for Color and Artifacts and also outperforming the iPhone when it comes to flash-powered selfie photography.

For many, video performance will be more important than stills. As ever, this is where Apple excels, enabling the iPhone 14 Pro to outclass the Pixel 7 Pro when it comes to capturing moving pictures from the front camera, even when it comes to color accuracy.

That said, this is another very strong result for the Pixel 7 Pro that leaves the door open for Google to improve video quality through future software updates and bolster its best-in-class main camera performance.
