Iryna Petrovska Marchiano was demonstrating the ancient Ukrainian tradition of creating wax-dyed eggs to a roomful of strangers Sunday afternoon in Houston, but her mind was on the bloody war ravaging her homeland 10,000 miles away.

“When I got married in Ukraine in 2013, my Russian family members came to the wedding,” Marchiano said, her voice filled with emotion. “They entered alive and they left alive, yet nine months later when Russia invaded Crimea they were calling me a Nazi. If my own family members believe Russian propaganda — that black is white and white is black — then there is very little I can add to that.
