The Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 Board of Education voted to rename two middle schools for civil rights icons, replacing historical figures with slavery ties.

Daniel Webster Middle School was renamed after Edith M. Smith, a Waukegan parent who worked to desegregate Waukegan schools in the 1960s and later worked for the school district.

Urlacher had not initially filed for reelection because he was under indictment for sports-related gambling charges but became a write-in candidate after his pardon from Trump.

The wood and metal bridge, built in 1906, has been struck approximately 20 times since its reopening in 2018, after a box truck caused massive damage when it crashed into it.

In 2021, officials passed an ordinance amending the village code regarding local traffic restrictions, hoping the move would alert internet search engine map providers to update their software to not offer driving routes across the covered bridge.
